According to the Federal Trade Commission, the cost of identity theft in 2004 reached $50 billion annually. At the end of 2005, global cybercrime turned over more money than drug trafficking. US Treasury advisor Valerie McNiven told Reuters, "Last year was the first year that proceeds from cybercrime were greater than proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs, and that was, I believe, over $105bn."
